Dining in Zermatt: A Review of the Top Restaurants

The first thing that comes to mind when traveler’s think about Zermatt, Switzerland is typically skiing the Matterhorn. However, this area is also known for its unique cuisine and variety of restaurants, making it a great destination for the culinary enthusiast. Some of the top restaurants in the area are discussed below.


Findlerhof is located in the quaint village of Findeln right outside of Zermatt, and it is known for being one of the best mountain restaurants in the region. It is located on a steep mountainside, but despite its remote location, it is a very popular destination. The cuisine featured is a fusion of German, Austrian, and Swiss, and it features entrees like meat and salmon carpaccio, a rosti potato pancake, and a leek, onion, and cheese quiche. Visitors can access this restaurant by taking the Sunnegga chairlift, and reservations are required.

Alex Grill

Located in the basement of the Hotel Alex, this restaurant is stylishly decorated with flagstone floors, carved panels, and bright accessories. The food found at Alex Grill is based primarily on regional and classic Swiss recipes, and the restaurant prides itself on using all fresh ingredients. Famous entrees prepared at Alex Grill include:

  • Grilled rack of lamb
  • Veal kidneys in mustard sauce
  • Salmon and herb mousse infused chicken breast

Alex Grill also features in-season game and seafood delicacies like lobster and Atlantic oysters.

Grillroom Stockhorn

Owned by Michel Julen, this bar and restaurant is located in the four room Hotel Stockhorn. The varnished pine and regionally decorated grillroom seats 64 people who can dine on wood fired meat specialties and authentic Swiss fondues. The entrée specials that visitors can enjoy induce:

  • Lamb filet
  • Leg of lamb
  • Filet of stag
  • Double sirloin steak
  • Chateaubriand

Reservations to the Grillroom Stockhorn are recommended due to the limited seating in this small and quaint restaurant.

Snowboat, The Zermatt Yacht Club

This restaurant was designed to look different from other Zermatt restaurants, as it includes boat-like features complete with a bow and sundeck. This restaurant is situated on the river and is conveniently located near the train station and ski lift. The restaurant offers four course tasting menus, alcoholic beverages, and coffee drinks in a cool dining atmosphere accentuated by live blues and jazz music. The café features Carlito Coffee from the Ticine and Ronnefeldt teas featuring a variety of different flavors.
