Although there have been trains traveling to and from Zermatt for many years now, the commute has improved considerably since 2003 when a merger between a couple of different companies produced the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. Although for many of those who commute back and forth from one of the many villages that can be accessed by the railway and Zermatt, it seems like the merger just took place yesterday, it has now been 10 years, and the companies that own the railway are celebrating the anniversary.
The celebration of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn’s 10th anniversary will be taking place throughout 2013, with a variety of promotions being offered in honor of the anniversary of the merger. While the promotions are designed more for those individuals who live in the area and commute often, there are some that visitors to Zermatt or one of the other Swiss villages in the area can take advantage of as well, if they are in the right place at the right time. And if not, they can still celebrate the prestigious railway’s anniversary by taking a ride on the train that offers by far the most spectacular views of the Swiss Alps and the Matterhorn, which is, of course, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
Background of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn
Before the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn was what it is today there were two separate railways that transported Swiss travelers between Brig and Göschenen, Andermatt and Disentis, and Brig and Zermatt. Those railways were the BVZ, or the Zermatt-Bahn, and the Furka-Oberlap-Bahn. Now the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn takes travelers along those routes, and to a number of different Swiss villages and cities by connectors, such as the Glacier Express and the Rhaetian Railway. One of the most popular of these cities is St. Moritz. Since travelers have been commuting these routes for 10 years now aboard the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, the companies that merged to create the railway are celebrating that very successful strategic move.
Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn 10th Anniversary Celebration Promotions
Due to the fact that it is the 10th anniversary being celebrated, there will be monthly promotions offered on the 10th day of each month throughout 2013. There is no hint as to what those promotion offerings will be, and they will not be known until right before they are offered, but it could be well worth your while to stay posted to find out. In addition to the monthly promotions there will also be a promotion running up until the 21st of April, which will give discounted rides that include ski passes for Zermatt to families living in the Valais area. And for those lucky enough to be in certain areas on April 6th an 27th, there will even be the opportunity to see how this very famous Swiss railway runs behind the scenes.
Visiting Zermatt alone is worth traveling to Switzerland for, but celebrating the joy that the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn has brought so many over the last 10 years is reason even more.Google+
