Zermatt Igloo Village

Zermatt Igloo VillageStay in the highest igloo village in the Swiss Alps – Zermatt Igloo Village.  Zermatt is probably most famous for fantastic Swiss Alps skiing conditions; however, there are many Zermatt attractions that have tourists flocking to Zermatt resorts all throughout the year. One such attraction is the Igloo Village.  A Swiss Alps vacation would not be complete without a tour of a real Zermatt igloo village.

Perched at 2,727 meters above Zermatt in the shadow the great Matterhorn, the igloo village attracts visitors who want to enjoy the Snow Bars that are open 24-hours a day, a delicious fondue, BBQ meal or a tour through the igloo labyrinth.  Some couples dream of getting married in the breathtaking igloo church constructed solely from snow and ice.

For the adventurous, overnight stays are available at the igloo village.  From romantic igloos to igloos that accommodate families, there is something special for each overnight guest.  Enjoy mulled wine and a traditional cheese fondue before you snuggle into an expedition-style sleeping bag to keep you warm throughout the night.  Some igloos have private baths for more privacy.  For those who want to enjoy a night in the igloo village but prefer a more traditional sleeping arrangement, the hot igloo is a heated igloo tent with an oven and double bed.

If you want to learn how these fascinating structures are made, you can take an igloo building workshop.  Introduction workshops are about one hour long.  For more intensive instruction, visitors can take a three or five hour workshop to experience the thrill of building your very own igloo.  If you are coming for the day, wear warm, winter-proof clothing (such as ski clothing), comfortable winter shoes and warm, water-resistant gloves.  Sunglasses, sunscreen and hats are also advised.  If you are staying overnight, you will also need long underwear for sleeping, towel, swimwear, toothbrush and personal toiletries.  Backpacks are better than suitcases for a trip to the igloo village.  Also, remember to bring cash, as the igloo village does not accept credit cards for payment.  Do not forget your camera – the views are amazing and you will want to capture every moment to share with your family and friends.

The easiest way to reach the igloo village is by utilizing the public transportation system in Zermatt.  From Zermatt, simply take the Gornergrat railway directly from Zermatt to the igloo village.
